IN THIS ISSUECOUGHS? I’VE HEARD A FEW...Coughing. I can hardly remember a concert when I haven’t heard someone hacking or snuffling away. And with winter upon us, there has been a cacophony of it, not to mention programs crashing to the floor and phones going off – all of which is distracting for both the musicians and the audience. At one recent performance, it got so bad that a gentleman a few seats along from me politely asked the lady next to him, who had coughed off and on throughout the entire first act, if she would mind leaving. She did so with good grace. In June, Maestro Riccardo Muti brought the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to a halt when a quiet moment was disrupted by talking and a loud cough (see page 13). When we first…2 min

REGULARS…LettersANTON TO CLASSICAL MUSIC I was delighted to read your article on Anton Enus (June 2018). Anton has been sadly missed by SBS watchers. His story is a tribute to classical music and to Richard Gill who has been clamouring for years about the need for our children to hear classical music. It is a sad reflection on the AMEB [Australian Music Examinations Board] and on our society that nowadays music exams do not require much classical input. How are children ever to know classical music exists if they never hear it? At least Anton Enus heard blues and jazz as a child. I can only rejoice he finally discovered the beauty of classical music too. Etiennette Fennell, Panorama, SA COUGH SWEETS [In response to the online Limelight story about…3 min
REGULARS…DON’T FORGET THAT MUSICIANS ARE HUMANThanks for the lovely review Limelight [of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra s Simone Young and Kolja Blacher concert on July 6]. Just a brief note to your reviewer, however, to give context to some of the ‘trivialities’ he mentioned: bottles of water on stage and a player having to leave during the performance. Whilst these sights may have mildly offended, it’s just a brief reminder that as musicians, we are as human as those sitting in the audience. Playing a 50-minute symphony that asks a lot of you physically and mentally is hard enough.... doing so whilst you have the flu like half of Melbourne is quite another challenge. Having some water on stage can sometimes be the difference in making it through a concert when you’re ill. And the only…1 min

Germany’s Goldmund Quartett won First Prize in the String Quartet division, taking home $30,000, with the Eliot Quartett – from Austria, Russia and Germany – taking second and the USA’s Callisto Quartet taking Third Prize. “The standard has been exceptional, making the jurors’ decision extremely challenging,” MICMC Artistic Director Wilma Smith said. “We’ve been privileged to witness the future of chamber music taking shape right here in Melbourne. And what…2 min
