There was tension between Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton as they discussed McLaren's pace at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Lando Norris has previously made his feelings on Lewis Hamilton clear having faced backlash for his post-Hungarian Grand Prix comments. The pair were seen in an awkward exchange in the cooldown room after Sunday's race.

Norris appeared to take Hamilton’s praise of McLaren's machinery the wrong way, with TV cameras picking up what was said. The seven-time world champion exclaimed: “Whoo, you guys are fast!” Norris then rather sharply responded: “Yeah, well you had a fast car seven years ago.”

After a confused moment of pause, Hamilton quipped: "Seven years ago? That's a long time. Were you here seven years ago?" His fellow Brit doubled down, adding: “You know, you had a quick car. You made the most of it, now it's us." Clarifying his intentions, Hamilton continued: “I wasn't complaining, I was just complimenting you on your car."

Emotions were naturally high for Norris, who appeared reluctant to hand back first place to team-mate Oscar Piastri after he’d been given pit priority by the team and emerged in the lead. The 24-year-old eventually obeyed team orders, letting Piastri through with three laps to go.

He visibly wasn’t happy about the situation, and that frustration seemed to spill over into his chat with Hamilton. But he clearly holds the veteran Mercedes star in high regard, as evidenced when he took a lie detector test before the Miami Grand Prix in May.

One of the questions asked by Sky Sports’ Simon Lazenby was if Norris felt he was the best British driver on the grid, ahead of Hamilton and George Russell. After answering “yes”, the lie detector indicated he wasn’t telling the truth.

Lazenby pressed: “Who is the best then?” To which Norris admitted: “Lewis.” Both he and Hamilton have praised one another publicly in the past, although Norris did apologise to him back in 2020 after saying: “He's in a car which should win every race, basically.

"He has to beat one or two other drivers, that's it. Fair play to him, he's still doing the job he has to do." Norris later took to social media and wrote: "I owe an apology.

“I've been stupid and careless with some things I've said lately in media and interviews, and haven't shown the respect I should have to certain people. I'm not that kind of person, so know I should apologise to them but also everyone reading/listening. Sorry.”
